Vitamin C

Energy, healthy living and fast healing through vitamin C.

Probably the most popular vitamin in this day and age, vitamin C is well known for it’s effect on healthy living and its wide availability in fruits and vegetables. It comes as no surprise that the body needs vitamin C for over 300 functions. Vitamin C is proven to protect against heart disease, cancer and other serious illnesses. Vitamin C is necessary for the body to be able to heal itself too. Indeed, vitamin C is vital to the natural production of collagen. Collagen helps heal wounds and injuries, without sufficient vitamin C, it might take longer to heal, if it heals at all. Besides helping the body heal, collagen has many functions in the human body, including keeping organs and bones in place. This is another reason vitamin C is crucial during growth, when the organs and bones develop.

Vitamin C and the immune system

Vitamin C is an antioxidant and it also helps other vitamins and minerals to get absorbed better. As an example, folic acid and iron, need vitamin C to be carry out their function properly. Higher levels of vitamin C in the body, helps defend against colds and other common ailments. Although vitamin C may not prevent you from catching a virus, it will help speed up your recovery.

What contains vitamin C

Almost every fruit and vegetable has vitamin C but some have far higher vitamin C concentrations than others. For example, melons and cranberries have high vitamin C content. Tropical fruits have the highest vitamin C contents of all fruits. When it comes to vegetable sources, hot peppers are in the lead. It’s interesting to know that the hotter the pepper, the higher the concentration of vitamin c. Vitamin C is water soluble, this means that boiling vegetables will most likely decrease the content of vitamin C that you will end up getting.  A better way to prepare vegetables, all the while keeping these essential nutrients, is by steaming or stir frying them, to ensure the vitamin C content is retained.

How much supplement do you need

It’s absolutely essential to get sufficient vitamin C in your body, for proper healthy function. It’s also easy to obtain the recommended amount of vitamin C through a healthy diet including five portions of fruit or vegetables daily, of course eaten raw, or like instructed above. If you’re feeling tired a lot of the time, or lack that boost of energy to get going, vitamin C is definitely something you should try. Especially considering that vitamin C being a water soluble vitamin there’s no real danger in having too much.

    Hey There Benefitofsupplements,
Interesting Thoughts, A good example would be: Some GP’s will dismiss Vitamin tablets by saying they give you next to zero benefit because it is not absorbed by the body, yet they will strongly endorse other tablet forms that give nutrients i.e folic acid for pregnant woman? Either nutrients are absorbed by the body or not? Please can I have a clear answer from a health Professional (or someone who REALLY knows) only please. Than You.
